Alabama is one of thirty-one states with a primary seat belt law, which allows law enforcement officers to issue tickets solely for failure to buckle up. By law, you are required to wear your seat belt, no matter how short the trip. Surveys conducted at the conclusion of the 2008 "Click It or Ticket" campaign indicated that 86.1% of Alabamians buckled up.
The image to the right is that of a vehicle that was hit by a DUI driver at Interstate speeds. It rolled over and skidded on its roof for over 200 feet. After hanging in her restraint upside down for about 15 minutes, she was extricated by EMS personnel and had only minor injuries. It seems clear that her life was saved by taking two seconds to buckle up.
The graphic below illustrates the effectiveness of restraints as given by Alabama data.
