With the EV tax credit being eliminated, concerns have mounted in the automotive industry that sales of electric cars and trucks will plummet starting in October. After reviewing the legislation that would repeal the credit, and speaking to the Internal Revenue Service about the details, GM and Ford apparently saw an opportunity. The legislation states that, if a taxpayer acquires a vehicle by having a written contract in place and a payment made before September 30, 2025, then the taxpayer could claim the credit when they take possession of the vehicle—even if they don’t take possession before September 30.
