Teens are driving unsupervised too late at night, a recent study suggests, and expanding restrictions on their nighttime driving to include the hours before midnight could save lives. Driving in the dark is more difficult than driving during daylight hours, so every state but Vermont puts limits on teens’ nighttime driving.
This study examines data from a sample of in-depth crash investigations to estimate the number of crashes, injuries, and deaths in the U.S. each year that are caused by debris on the roads or falling from vehicles.
National Safety Council: “While many factors likely contributed to the fatality increase, a stronger economy and lower unemployment rates are at the core of the trend, and another likely factor is the fact that average gas prices for the first six months of this year were 16 percent lower than in 2015.”
