The U. S. Department of Transportation said it is launching an initiative that includes two pilot programs to modernize its own data analysis and integrate traditional datasets with new “big data” sources to gain insights into highway safety.

“Advances in data science have the potential to transform the department’s approach to safety research and provide insights that can help improve highway safety,” Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said in a press release.

Undersecretary for Policy Derek Kan announced the initiative Jan. 8 at the Transportation Research Board’s annual conference in Washington, D.C.
