Transportation is fundamental to the vibrancy of the Nation and facilitates economic prosperity and quality of life. It enables people to engage in productive pursuits and experience the social interactions that take full advantage of geographic specialization and diffusion. An efficient and resilient transportation system and its seamless operation underpin the overall efficiency and resilience of the entire economy. Recognizing the importance of transportation and the importance of objective statistics for transportation decision-making, Congress requires the Director of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) to provide the Transportation Statistics Annual Report (TSAR) each year to Congress and the President.1 BTS published the first TSAR in 1994.
